LR: First of all: thanks for your time! How did you originally get involved in the Chainlink community and how have you seen it evolve since you started?

TLM: Thank you for reaching out. My journey with Chainlink began alongside a close friend, as we delved into the worlds of Bitcoin and Ethereum. It was during this exploration that Chainlink caught my attention, revealing its potential to connect blockchain technology with real-world data. The prospect of Chainlink serving as a bridge between isolated digital islands and the real world was a revelation.

My initial contribution to the community was the monthly Chainlink Ecosystem roundup graphic. As a designer by trade, I saw an opportunity to utilize my skills by creating graphics that showcased new additions to the Chainlink ecosystem members each month. This was something no one else was doing at the time, and it quickly became a popular tool for the community, keeping everyone abreast of Chainlink’s progress.

However, as Chainlink’s ecosystem expanded, the graphic grew so large it became impractical for mobile viewing. This challenge led me to think about how I could further elevate my contribution, and so I began designing and building chainlinkecosystem.com. This website has since become a cornerstone of the community, serving not only as a valuable resource for the Chainlink team internally but also as an informative hub for the wider Chainlink community. The success of chainlinkecosystem.com stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives in the crypto space.

Reflecting on the evolution of the Chainlink community, it’s been a remarkable journey. From a modest following we’ve steadily grown into a thriving ecosystem comprised of developers, researchers, enthusiasts and now even large enterprises such as SWIFT and DTCC. This growth is not just in numbers but in the diversity and expertise of its members. Being a part of this transformation, and contributing in a way that leverages my skills, has been an incredibly fulfilling journey, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be able to contribute to a project that is going to affect so many changes.

LR: Your Twitter feed is characterized by high-quality content that brings transparency to the Chainlink ecosystem. Could you tell us what motivates you to make such a contribution?

TLM: My motivation is primarily driven by a deep belief in its potential, not just in the blockchain space, but in its ability to make a tangible difference globally. The prospect of Chainlink powering decentralized insurance and levelling the playing field for the underprivileged resonates strongly with me. It highlights the real-world impact technology can have, far beyond just financial markets.

From the moment I understood Chainlink, I was blown away by its immense potential. I instinctively knew Chainlink was set to be a game-changer, even bigger than the internet in my opinion. because it offers a key to integrating existing companies and future innovations onto the blockchain to unlock a global layer of liquidity. It feels like standing at the brink of the internet revolution back in the ’90s, only this time round, instead of a shift to ‘online’, it’s the shift to an ‘on-chain’ future.

This vision of a world where every company integrates with Chainlink is fascinating, similar to how businesses realised the necessity of being online in the ’90s. It’s the transformation from digital to decentralized, and Chainlink is at the forefront of this shift. From providing fair and accessible financial services to creating trustless insurance systems, the implications are far-reaching.

My aim through my Twitter feed and other contributions is to shed light on these possibilities. I want to help people see beyond the technicalities of blockchain and understand the real-world impact Chainlink can have. It’s an exciting future, and I feel privileged to be part of a community that’s not just talking about change but actively working towards it.

LR: You received Chainlink Community Grants to build chainlinkecosystem.com and chainlinktoday.com – can you walk us through your journey from idea to realization of both sites?

TLM: My path to creating chainlinkecosystem.com began with a simple, self-driven goal: to track the ever-growing list of Chainlink’s integrations. As my monthly ecosystem graphics became increasingly packed, I envisioned a directory website to better showcase Chainlink’s burgeoning partnerships. Initially launched on WordPress and covered the cost out-of-pocket, I quickly realized the platform’s limitations and to grow it as the go-to Chainlink Ecosystem directory I needed to pay for better technology.

The introduction of Chainlink’s community grant program was a game-changer. I secured funding to develop a more robust site, enhancing user experience with advanced filtering options and seamless content organization. The revamped site was a hit, now cataloguing over 2000 companies and projects that have had announcements with Chainlink.

The success of chainlinkecosystem.com led to my next Chainlink ecosystem project, chainlinktoday.com, to share the Chainlink ecosystem’s news. Also funded by a Chainlink community grant, it became the go-to daily digest for Chainlink news

Both Chainlink-related projects have been a major part of my Chainlink journey, documenting its evolution and providing the community with reliable information. The positive response from the community has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m excited to continue growing with Chainlink’s vibrant ecosystem.

Fostering Web3 Unity: How to Strengthen the Community

LR: Based on your experience, what advice can you give to those who want to make a positive contribution to communities in Web3?

TLM: In my journey with Chainlink and the broader Web3 space, I’ve learned a few key principles that can guide anyone looking to make a positive impact. Firstly, it’s crucial to identify and leverage your unique strengths and interests. Whatever your skill set, there’s a place for it in the dynamic world of Web3.

Active community engagement is vital. This goes beyond online interactions; attending industry events and conferences can be beneficial too, and can lead to tangible opportunities to collaborate. For instance, it was through my attendance at Chainlink’s SmartCon2023 that I met with the LTOADS team and this led to the opportunity for me to build their website.

Staying informed and adaptable is also crucial in the fast-evolving landscape of Web3. Keep up-to-date with the latest developments and be open to new technologies and ideas.

To summarize, utilize your strengths, actively engage in the community both online and in-person, stay informed, network, collaborate, and remain patient and persistent. My experience has shown me that these principles can open doors to exciting and meaningful projects in the Web3 world.

LR: Which Chainlink services and collaborations excite you the most?

TLM: The collaboration between DTCC and Chainlink is pretty exciting. Annually the DTCC handles several quadrillion dollars worth of value, so seeing how this unfolds should be interesting!

Similarly, Chainlink’s collaboration with SWIFT on blockchain interoperability is groundbreaking. It demonstrates how financial institutions can use their existing SWIFT connections along with Chainlink to facilitate the transfer of tokenized assets across blockchain networks. This collaboration utilizes Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) for secure, scalable cross-chain messaging and token transfers, marking a significant advancement in connecting traditional financial infrastructure with blockchain technology.

Moreover, DECO, an upcoming product from Chainlink, presents a promising advancement in privacy-preserving technology. It enables users to prove the authenticity of data without revealing the data itself, offering privacy and universality in transactions, this could open up some really ground-breaking innovations.

Becoming a Credible Web3 Contributor

LR: Standing out as anon on Crypto Twitter is a challenge. How did you build credibility and what is the key to maintaining it throughout your journey?

TLM: Building and maintaining credibility as an anon on Crypto Twitter has been a journey of consistent learning and community engagement. From the outset, my focus was on providing accurate, insightful, and up-to-date information about Chainlink and its developments. This consistency in quality content helped establish my credibility.

Maintaining this credibility requires a continuous commitment to integrity and learning. The crypto space is fast-evolving, so staying informed and adapting my content to reflect the latest trends and updates is crucial. It’s also about transparent communication and engaging constructively with the community, whether that’s through responding to queries or participating in discussions.

The key to sustaining credibility is in the value you bring to your audience. For me, that has always been about demystifying complex concepts and keeping the community informed about Chainlink’s advancements and impact.

The Impact and Significance of Community-Driven Web3 Initiatives

LR: What role do you think community-driven initiatives like yours play in the wider adoption and success of Web3?

TLM: Community-driven initiatives play a pivotal role in the adoption and success of Web3. They serve as educational platforms, breaking down the barriers of complex blockchain concepts, making them accessible and understandable to a wider audience. This educational aspect is crucial for demystifying Web3 and encouraging broader adoption.

Moreover, these initiatives help build trust and engagement. They create a sense of community, where members feel supported and informed. This trust is fundamental in a space as dynamic and often misunderstood as Web3.

Lastly, initiatives like mine will inspire active participation. They show that individual contributions matter and can have a significant impact, encouraging more people to get involved, innovate, and drive the Web3 movement forward.

SmartCon Smiles: The Grand Restaurant Bill Adventure

LR: How did it feel to pay Ari Juel’s restaurant bill at SmartCon 2023 and then have him appreciate it in a tweet addressed to the Chainlink community?

TLM: Picking up the tab for Ari at SmartCon 2023 was a cool moment! When he tweeted about it, acknowledging the gesture, it was funny knowing this was just one more piece to add to the rich tapestry of moments that is Chainlink’s history. It’s these small, human moments that bring our community together. It was just a simple act, but it was great to see it appreciated and shared with the whole Chainlink community.

LR: What challenges and opportunities have you encountered as an anonymous person in the crypto space and how do you balance privacy and community engagement?

TLM: Staying anon in the crypto world is a bit of a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s tough to get people to take you seriously when they don’t know who you are. But, there’s a flip side. Being anonymous means I can say what I think without it coming back to bite me. It’s all about the ideas, not who’s saying them.

As for juggling privacy with being part of the community, I’ll typically share my two pence, but keep my personal life out of it.

Future Focus: Shaping Web3

LR: Do you have any future plans related to the Chainlink and wider Web3 ecosystem that you would like to share with us?

TLM: Looking ahead, I’m genuinely excited about contributing more to the Chainlink and wider Web3 ecosystem, particularly by using my skills in a way that can truly make a difference. I recently collaborated with Omniscience, the 7th official Chainlink node operator on their website (omniscience.uk), and also recently redesigned and rebuilt the LTOADS website.

I believe that good design and seamless functionality are key to making Web3 accessible and engaging to a broader audience. I’m keen on collaborating on new Web3 projects, bringing my expertise to the table to help create platforms that not only look great but also enhance user understanding and engagement. It’s about making a positive impact in this evolving space, one project at a time.

Bonus Question

LR: As a last question, what is your favorite Chainlink meme?

TLM: Ah, picking the top Chainlink meme is tough with so many classics! But, the one with Pepe the Frog cozying up with a Chainlink storybook, that’s gold. It’s just spot-on about the OG Link Marine vibe – totally captures that snug, ‘got it made’ feeling we’ve had since the start. It’s light, it’s fun, and it’s us.

LR: Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions, sir.
